Understanding the Basics of Algebra

Understanding the Basics of Algebra
Algebra is a systematic study of numbers an their relationship, using a specific rule.

Words use in Algebra

EXPRESSION is the combination of values and operation which can be use to show how things relate and compare to one another (2x2  + 4x).

TERM is the grouping together of one or more factors (3xy). The only thing connecting the number with the variables is multiplication (×), while addition(+) and subtraction(-) separate terms from one another (5x + 4xy - 6).

EQUATION uses equal (=) sign use to show relationship  (2x2 + 4x = 10) that two things are equal.

OPERATION is perform on one or two numbers to produce a resulting number, which are addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, square roots, and so on.

VARIABLE is a letter that represent an unknown , it always represents a number but it varies in some advance mathematics. Commonly, mathematicians assign letters at the end of the alphabet (x, y, and z ) to be the variable.

CONSTANT is a number or value that never change in an equation, mathematicians assign the letter at the beginning of the alphabet  (a, b, and c). (ax2 + bx + c = 0  in this equation a, b, and c are constants and x is the variable).

EXPONENT sometimes called the power is a small number written above, the right of a variable or number (3 in the expression 43).
Symbols uses in Algebra
+ means add, find the sum, more than, increased by, find the sum, indicator of positive sign.

- means subtract, minus, decreased by less than, find the difference, indicator of negative number.

x means multiply, times. Numbers being multiplied together are the multipliers which result in product. Sometimes in algebra · (dot) or × is use to reduces confusion.

÷ or  / means divide, divisor is the number that divide the dividend which result in quotient.

means square root which is use to find the number that multiples itself (the number under the square root).

|| means an absolute value of a number.

π is the Greek letter pi, is an irrational number 3.14159. also the relationship between circumference and diameter
.

≈  means approximately equal. it a great symbol used when rounding a number.
Symbols use for Grouping in Algebra
Grouping in algebra are done by some grouping symbol, whenever you see an equation that have any of the grouping symbol, we will be mentioning below you should know that the terms inside the symbols are to deal with first, and follow by the order of operation.

Parentheses () : Most commonly used symbol for grouping.

Brackets []: Frequently used and have same effect as parentheses.

Braces {} : It have same effect has bracket and parentheses.

When you are working on an algebra equation (or other containing grouping symbol), it may come to a time where you will use symbol for grouping more than one times, it could be better to use different types of grouping symbol to group, to give you more control on where each group starts and ends.

Radical   : Used for finding roots.

Fraction line(—) : it also help in grouping, especially in a problem containing division.
