A 3,700 Years-old Tablet Has Let The World Know!

image from google

Plimpton 332,
a 3,700 years-old tablet has let the world know that the Babylonians in 1,500 years ago developed trigonometry far before the Greeks. And they were beign using a Mathematics method or Mathematics formula which today`s way of calculation could be changed with.

This simple tablet was discovered in early 19s in Southern Iraq by the American archaeologist and diplomat Edgar Banks, an inspiration for Indiana Jones.

It meaning, the world`s most accurate and oldest trigonometric table, has distorbed experts until when the new research at the University of New South Wales, Ausralia, shows the world. This 3,700-years-old tablet was probably used by the ancient architects to build palaces, construct templates and canals.

On the other hand, today`s trigonometry use base 10, unlike the Babylonian Mathematics which base on sexagesimal system or base 60, the experts studying the tablet, found that with the system calculation will be far more accurate than today`s base 10 system, all because 60 is far easier to divide by three.

From the researchers:

“Our research reveals that Plimpton 322 describes the shapes of right-angle triangles using a novel kind of trigonometry based on ratios, not angles and circles,”  -- said Dr Daniel Mansfield of the School of Mathematics and Statistics in the UNSW Faculty of Science.

“It is a fascinating mathematical work that demonstrates undoubted genius. The tablet not only contains the world’s oldest trigonometric table; it is also the only completely accurate trigonometric table, because of the very different Babylonian approach to arithmetic and geometry.

“This means it has great relevance for our modern world. Babylonian mathematics may have been out of fashion for more than 3000 years, but it has possible practical applications in surveying, computer graphics and education.
“This is a rare example of the ancient world teaching us something new.”
The Greek astronomer Hipparchus, who lived around 120BC, has long been regarded as the father of trigonometry, with his ‘table of chords’ on a circle considered the oldest trigonometric table.
A trigonometric table allows a user to determine two unknown ratios of a right-angled triangle using just one known ratio. But the tablet is far older than Hipparchus, demonstrating that the Babylonians were already well advanced in complex mathematics far earlier.

Babylon, which was in modern day Iraq, was once one of the most advanced cultures in the world

The tablet, which is thought to have come from the ancient Sumerian city of Larsa, has been dated to between 1822 and 1762 BC. It is now in the Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Columbia University in New York.

“Plimpton 322 predates Hipparchus by more than 1000 years,” says Dr Wildberger.
“It opens up new possibilities not just for modern mathematics research, but also for mathematics education. With Plimpton 322 we see a simpler, more accurate trigonometry that has clear advantages over our own.

“A treasure-trove of Babylonian tablets exists, but only a fraction of them have been studied yet. The mathematical world is only waking up to the fact that this ancient but very sophisticated mathematical culture has much to teach us.”

The 15 rows on the tablet describe a sequence of 15 right-angle triangles, which are steadily decreasing in inclination.

The left-hand edge of the tablet is broken but the researchers believe t there were originally six columns and that the tablet was meant to be completed with 38 rows.

“Plimpton 322 was a powerful tool that could have been used for surveying fields or making architectural calculations to build palaces, temples or step pyramids,” added Dr Mansfield.
The new study is published in Historia Mathematica, the official journal of the International Commission on the History of Mathematics.

6 Tips to Solve Algebra Problems

People have been all day scare of algebra and some other topics in mathematics, the case may be you are not one of them, but I suggest you should look up to this advice.

Here are the 6 (six) tips or advice that will help you when ever you are solving any algebra problems - this may not work completely with words problems, it has it own ways too. So follow these and keep it to you every time.

Tip #1

Honestly, you should learn algebra before attending to solving it, while learning it don`t just look at your lecture or teacher try to work out every problems the instructor is working on and do solve problems that are far beyond you - that will make you ask more and know more.

Tips #2

To solve linear algebra, algebraic expression and other algebra likes, the basic underline knowledge to understand is the arithmetic: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. IT not that you memorize the multiplication table but to know and understand how they works and the connection between them.

Tips #3

The order of operation is another concept not stay without in algebra, it quite important as if it where the knowledge of algebra based on. It sometimes called BODMAS(Bracket Operator Division Multiplication Addition Subtraction), PEMDAS(Parentheses Exponents, Multiplication Division Addition Subtraction) and Order of Operator. The operator in BODMAS is just as the exponents in the PEMDAS.

Tips #4

Negative numbers are the lion in the street when working in algebra. This as caused many people headache while solving math problems, positive number are the simplest. To solve algebra problems easily: adding, subtracting, dividing and multiplying of  negative with negative, negative with positive positive with positive and positive with negative numbers must be well understood.

Tip #5

Make sure you work step by step, this will allow you to spot out err if you did not arrive at the right answer and will help in structuring your working, it`s easy to do just solve the problem step by step.
Also make sure all your working is neatly detail out.

Tip #6

Don`t get scared when you see a question, the first you should say to yourself is that I will solve this question and arrive at the perfect answer. Always keep note of every mistake you make while working a certain question, this will let you know what to do when you come across these kind of problems again. And to cut it off always follow a formula while necessary.

These are the tips I want to explain, I believe this will help you in you education and learning algebra. Feel free to share this with your friend who`s facing the same as you.

Comment below if you have any other tip or advice or an update of the tips I have write about.

Is Mathematics Difficult?

Is Mathematics Difficult?

Hello, It being a long time since I have posted, am sorry there are new things to learn in this world. Today I want to uncover something that has always be the talk of the town.

Is Mathematics Difficult? is the question I heard from many of my friends

In this post, I uncover the right answer.

Honestly, mathematics is hard and straightforward provided the person and the area you are solving. Many people will agree that addition is simpler than subtraction, and multiplication is more honest than division. Also if you were working on algebra, it is shown to be harder than ordinary multiplication or division, but it`s sure that you come across any of the big four in any problem you were working on in mathematics (Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division are the big four). This reason is why it is essential to understand these basics of math first before any other area.

However, I also know and believe many people will agree that basic Algebra is more straightforward than another advance concept in math, and remember you have to know the basics before going to the advance.
Inevitably, the way you approach learning math does affect, if you did not follow the standard procedure or teach by the right people you may see math as something complicated.

My perfect and helpful advice for you is that you should follow every guide you have in the post. I will love to hear from you. Thanks for reading.

Introduction to Factor

You maybe feeling curious about what exactly are Factor, Prime factor, Prime number and other related words, here I will explain the detail of all of those, so keep on reading for better understanding.
I promise I would not mess up, promise me you will understand it and even share it over and over to everybody you know.

Prime number is a number that is divisible by exactly two positive whole number: 1 and that number itself.
Composite number is a number that is divisible by at least three numbers.

FACTOR
Their is a very deep relationship between factor and division which I will uncover later, so please be calm.

Let say, 4 multiply by 5 the result is 20 (check multiplication for detail), these two number that are multiply together are factor for the result (20).
 4 * 5 = 20

In the quick explanation above:
  • 4 and 5 are factor to 20.
  • 4 and 5 are smaller number than 20.
  • 20 is bigger than those because they are it multiple.
  • 20 is a multiple of 4 and also a multiple of 5.
   5 is a factor of 20
  20 is a multiple of 5

Note: Two factor are multiplied to equal a product (Multiple)

Relationship between factor and division
Truly their is really true relationship but their is a vise verser friendship in their life circle.
 Following the quick explanation above.
 Let say, 20 divided by 5 equal 4, 20 divided by 4 equals 5.
 20 / 5 = 4, 20 / 4 = 5    (check division of number for detail),
  • 20 is divisible by 5 and 4.
  • 5 and 4 is a divisor of 20.

Conclusion: Thanks for taking your time to read this we will later write a new post on how to find a prime number, prime factor, factor of a specific number.

Please comment if their is any question or you want us to explain something about the topic being explain in this post.

How Surd Numbers are Multiply

How Surd Numbers are Multiply

Before reading this, it will be of great use to understanding the basics of surd and adding and subtracting of surd to get a good foundation.

Multiplication in surd is quite simple and even complicate in more advance surd, but for a starting, there are things to keep in mind.
When two or more surds are multiplying together, they should first be simplified if possible. Then take whole numbers with whole numbers and surds with surds.

Addition and subtraction of surds

Addition and subtraction of surds

May be you just come across this page it`s is good for you to understand the basics of surd, so that when adding or subtracting surds it won`t be somehow confusing.

Addition and subtraction of surds can be performed on two or more surds, if they are like surds (number under their radical are the same), also the surds should be first simplified if require.

Examples 1:

Examples 2:

Examples 3:

The surds should first be simplified if require.

"To simplify a surd, express the number under the radical as a product of two factors, one of which is a perfect square, then streamline the surd by taking the square root of the perfect square."

Examples 4:

Wondering how root 9 turns to 3 read on.

Examples 5:

Find the square root of 9, 3 * 3 is 9. See the diagram.

Always practice after you have been taught something.
